Dear Member
Many apologies for the delay in this latest newsletter. Hopefully it is not too late to wish you all a prosperous 2016.
Several paintings and pieces of pottery were sold at the winter exhibition with Vivienne Western taking the pottery prize with her lovely guinea fowl. We now have the dates for this year’s exhibitions so please put them in your diaries and on your calendars.
Spring exhibition (Jim Watson award)
Hand in 2nd April Preview evening 15th April exhibition runs from 16th April to 30th April
Summer exhibition
Hand in 16th July Preview 29th July exhibition runs from 30th July to 13 August
Winter exhibition
Hand in 12 November Preview 25th Nov. exhibition runs from 26th Nov. to 10th December
We plan to have a stand at Stevenage Day which is the second Sunday in June, 12th June. We will need several members to get involved and help during the course of that day. It will be aimed at promoting the Arts Society by displaying some of the members’ work and encouraging new members. Alec Craik is organising this and help will be needed setting up and during the course of the day, so please get in touch with him if you would like to be involved. [email protected]. A couple of hours chatting to people and giving information about the Society would be appreciated, and of course there will be so much going on.
Demonstrations and workshops are planned for the spring and autumn so here are more dates for your diaries.
The ever popular *KEITH HORNBLOWER will be demonstrating at the Arts Pavilion on 26th April at 7.30pm and he is booked to hold a workshop on 17th September. Details for this will be in a subsequent newsletter and a list for those wishing to do this workshop will be on the notice board nearer the time.
*ALEC CRAIK will be demonstrating in oils at the Arts Pavilion on 24th May. Alec runs a successful watercolour course on a Thursday evening, and it will be well worth coming along to see him demonstrate in oils. PTO
*DEREK DANIELLS is coming on 14th May to do a workshop at Springfield House. He will be working with oils but if you prefer to work in acrylics that will be fine. His previous workshops have been well supported so let a committee member know if you are interested or put your name on the list in the notice board in the workshop. The cost of this will be £25 a head for the day and you will need to bring a packed lunch.
Repairs are taking place in Springfield House at the moment but they should not inconvenience the Arts Society, though studio holders may feel a draught while the windows in the back corridor are being replaced. It may be necessary to obtain water from the bathroom or the gents while the taps and pipes in the artists’ washroom are being replaced.
Remember there is a well stocked library of books and instructional dvds in Gallery 2. Anyone wishing to borrow items can ask a committee member. Also Alec Craik has asked if any members would be interested in watching his instructional dvds in a group at the galleries. If there are enough members interested we would look at using a television or similar to show them. There would be a small charge but it may be helpful to watch in a group. Please let us have feedback on this idea.
As usual the AGM will take place on the last Monday in April which this year is the 25th. The meeting will be at 8pm in the workshop at Springfield House. Please try to come along as it is important to hear the views of members and take on board any fresh ideas. Do not feel that by attending you will be pressured into joining the committee but of course we always need new people who may be able to spare a few hours a month to help with the running of the Society.
