Winter/Spring newsletter 2018
Dear Member
Our dates for exhibitions this year are as follows :
During the year there have been some gaps on the invigilating list as some exhibitors did not invigilate. So please put your name down as you hand in, whether it be paintings or pottery. It is a requirement that you do at least one session of invigilating. Several members have found themselves covering where slots have not been filled. If even you don’t exhibit it would be wonderful if you feel able to, to spare a couple of hours and help out with invigilating. It is essential that if we are going to sell our work we need to keep the exhibitions open.
A workshop has been arranged with Denise Allen on Sunday 18th March. She will be using water mixable oils as this was so popular and over was subscribed when she came last year. We will supply oil paper and paints to save those taking part purchasing paints of their own before they have tried using them. The workshop will be from 10am until 4pm, upstairs in Springfield House, in the workshop and using both galleries to allow plenty of room to spread out. Bring a bring a packed lunch though Tesco Express is a few yards away. A list will go up in the workshop and there will be 12 places. The cost will be £25 for the day and we will require payment in full when you put your name on the list. Envelopes will be available for this purpose and can be put into the post box on the landing. Unfortunately we will have to ask this as in the past people have not turned up on the day and others could have had those places. Demonstrators charge a considerable amount to come to run workshops and we like to have places filled.
We have also confirmed a watercolour workshop with Keith Hornblower on Sunday 27th May. As usual it will be from 10am til 4pm and the cost will be £20. A list will go up on the noticeboard six weeks before and payment will be required when putting your name down. Envelopes will be there for this purpose and can be left in the postbox on the landing.
We will be arranging other workshops during the year for painters and hopefully some for pottery with another raku firing day which we are hoping to arrange for the last weekend in May. This is fascinating and those taking part last year thoroughly enjoyed it and produced some interesting work. There will also be another workshop with Shu Li. We will keep you informed as we confirm dates.
We are booking demonstrators for April and May so keep the fourth Tuesday of those months in your diaries. 7.30 pm at the Arts Pavilion on the Roaring Meg. Keith Hornblower is booked for the 22nd May but April is cancelled.
The AGM this year will be on Thursday 31st at 7.30pm the day after the May Bank Holiday Monday. We will start the meeting at 7.30pm as some members had commented that it would be easier for them if it was earlier than 8pm. Please keep that date clear as we would like as many as possible there. Please think if there is any way you can help by joining the committee or by assisting with a few secretarial tasks. Being on the committee will not take a great deal of your time as we only meet in total ten times a year and meetings do not last more than a couple of hours, usually less. Having the AGM a week later than previously will give the Treasurer and auditors time to prepare the accounts and Treasurer’s report.
Again, it would be lovely to step aside and let someone else take the position of Chairman for a year or two. Please give it some thought but it should be someone who is familiar with Springfield House, the history and the structure of the Arts Society. It would be nice for a potter to give it a go.
We are considering allowing the submission of photographs or digitally produced pictures in our exhibitions as we move with the times. These will have to be the unique work of the Society member/artist and not be massed produced. We will keep you informed about this.
As many posters as possible must be distributed around the town and surrounding villages prior to exhibitions to encourage visitors to the galleries. Please all take responsibility for getting advertising out there for our exhibitions. We all want to sell our work and encourage new members.
A studio space has become vacant if anyone is interested. It is a small space and would be shared with one of our long standing members. You will need to have been a member of the Society for at least a year and will need to get on with the other artist. Please contact a member of the committee if you are interested.
Active groups are on Tuesday evening, Wednesday mornings and Wednesday evenings and members are always welcome to come along. If a few of you want to form a group, Mondays and Fridays are free in the workshop so just let us know if you want to come along and get a group going on those days.
A reminder that subscriptions are due in April so get them in anytime now.
The committee look forward to seeing you at the workshops and demonstrations and as many of you as possible at the AGM.
