Dear Member,
The Newsletter has a new author. I am Jessica Davis, a member of the Wednesday morning painting group, and a committee member. There are a number of things to be mentioned. Firstly, hand in for the Summer Exhibition will be on Saturday 22nd August, 10am-12pm. The actual exhibition will run from 29th August until 12th September, with the Preview on Friday 28th, at 7:30pm. Friends and family are very welcome. Everything is later this year because of the repairs on Springfield House.
Exhibitors must fill in their name on the Exhibition Invigilation Rota when they hand in their exhibits. It is vital that anyone who exhibits, be it only a small piece, gives their time to invigilate for a two hour slot. If you aren’t able to di it yourself for any reason, you are welcome to send a friend or family member in your place. You can also invigilate with someone for company. Eating, drinking, reading, etc, is also allowed, as long as it is discrete and you tidy up afterwards. There are clear instructions on what to do in the desk on the landing. If you are unsure just ask another member.
As a society, we have a busy couple of months. We have had our delayed Springs Exhibition in Springfield House and had an number of our members exhibiting their paintings in the Pi Bistro in the Gordon Craig Theater. This was part of the Stevenage Arts Festival. New paintings have been taken to our exhibiting venues, Glaxo and the Stanmore Road surgery, replacing the ones that had been displayed there. Also, we had members involved in promoting the Arts Society to the spectators of the Aviva Women’s Tour (cycling). The finishing line was opposite Springfield House.
On another note, there are a fair few paintings that need to be collected from both the workshop cupboard and the Back Gallery. WE haven’t got the space to store these pieces.
There are also a number of members that haven’t paid their membership fees this year. They are now £20 for full-paying members and £18 for concessions. Please make any cheques out to Stevenage Arts Society Ltd. THE Ltd bit is important, that bank is unhappy to process cheques without it. We have also decided to put a suggestion box on the upstairs landing. Feel free to write down your thoughts and suggestions.
With regards to the Demonstrations at the Arts Pavilion, the September 22nd evening will feature a demonstration of painting a landscape in oils. This will be lead by member, Alec Craik, and will be based on the teaching methods of celebrated painter/instructor Bob Ross. The evening of 27th October will see Denise Allen demonstrate painting a traditional landscape in oil. These both start at 7:30 and are at the Arts Pavilion, in the Roaring Meg, Stevenage.
Finally, we are planning to hold some watercolor tutoring sessions for a nominal fee, statring in early autumn. Anyone who’s interested, or know anyone who would be, let a committee member know. Some of you may not be aware who the committee members are now. There have been a few newcomers and departures of late. Here are the current members;
Mary Green Chairman
Anne Laidler Vice Chairman
Alan Cantwell Treasurer
Peggy Alderson Exhibition Officer
William Barnard Publicity Officer
Ted Walsby Committee Member
Jessica Davis Committee Member
Paul Southwood Committee Member
Richard Telling Committee Member
Jenny Densborough Committee Member
Molly Madgin Committee Member
That’s about it for now. Enjoy the summer.
Best Wishes
